The move is the Web search leader’s latest effort to cutcosts amid a tough economy and a broad slowdown in advertisingspending. In January Google laid off about 100 recruiters andit said up to 40 people would be laid off in February whenGoogle pulled the plug on its radio advertising effort. “When companies grow that quickly it’s almost impossible toget everything right and we certainly didn’t” Google SeniorVice President of Global Sales and Business Development midKordestani said in an announcement posted on Google’s blog onThursday. “In addition we over-invested in some areas in preparationfor the growth trends we were experiencing at the time” headded.

The alliance will bring together the best of both companies’ strengths to form a strong commercial and technology presence in the digital cinema marketplace. Together the two companies will develop numerous digital cinema products starting with the DTS Digital Cinema DC-20 powered by Qube a digital cinema server that meets DCI specifications and will be on display at ShoWest 2009. “The strategic alliance between Qube and DTS Digital Cinema will enable us to bring innovative digital cinema products to market much faster” said Chris Thomas CE and President of DTS Digital Cinema acquired from DTS Inc.

“We have had to scale back some of our activities. ” GM for its part pledged last month to cut $800 million from its advertising budget this year forcing it to stick to the script of traditional vehicle marketing. “We’re really focusing our marketing and advertising efforts on continuing to push the product message hard” said Mark LaNeve GM’s head of sales and marketing in North America. “We want consumers to be confident in GM and our products. ” GM is tackling the issue with a recent round of commercials for its Saturn brand which the company pledged last month to shutter or sell by 2012. The ads sought to assure buyers that Saturn is “still here” but marketing experts say the spots instead reminded consumers of GM’s woes. “It’s like water torture” said George Peterson of research firm AutoPacific.
